Last year when I took an Old Testament class for college, I wrote a blog series based on what I learned. I realize now, though it’s been almost a year since then, life got incredibly busy and I still haven’t posted my conclusion to that series.

Looking back on last year's fall semester, my main takeaways from that class are that (1) the Old Testament is relevant and applicable today, (2) it teaches us about the Church of then and now, and (3) it is a constant reminder of how we are sinners but God always forgives.

Studying the Old Testament has helped me to better understand the Gospel and helped me appreciate the importance of these themes regarding the Lord’s covenant with His people, which I never would have thought much about before.

Additionally, understanding the laws regarding worship in the past helps us become better worshipers of the Lord today. Though times have changed and we no longer have to make sacrifices to God, the heart behind the worship of God is just the same - to love God and others well.

Though some would argue it is not important to study the Old Testament because it is “outdated” or does not relate to our own lives, this is not true because the Old Testament is no less the Word of God than the New Testament is.

Studying the law helps us understand the nature and purpose of worship, and additionally, it helps us realize our desperate need for a savior – this is why studying the Old Testament is still so relevant and important to the life of a follower of Christ today.
